In the opening moments of “Pippin,” the Leading Player, soon to be embodied by Savina Barini at The Spot, jokingly invites the audience through song to “come and waste an hour or two.”
She then sings, appropriately for the musical’s upcoming run in Ketchum, “Journey to a spot exciting, mystic and exotic.”
Written by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson, “Pippin” premiered on Broadway in 1972. Between the original run and the 2013 revival, the musical has claimed nine Tony awards and eight Drama Desk awards. The play focuses on a fictionalized version of the titular historical figure, son of the 8th-century Frankish King Charlemagne, though the play has no pretense of accuracy.
