At WRHS, a ‘senior’ moment
Class president raises six figures for local scholarships
Jake Gorham is well aware of the cost of college—for him, and the rest of Blaine County’s 2020 graduates.
So, Wood River High School’s senior class president took it upon himself to do something about it. As the new scholarship development director for the Blaine County Education Foundation, he spent the past few months cold-calling businesses, nonprofits and community members to drum up support for local endowments. The result, as of last week: 12 new scholarships, totaling $104,500 in new contributions to fund post-secondary education for Blaine County kids.
The Education Foundation unveiled the new donations—plus other long-standing offerings—at a scholarship fair on Oct. 23. The application process opens on Dec. 9, and Gorham urges his peers to talk to their school’s college and career counselors to learn what’s available. Local awards will be announced at a scholarship ceremony in the spring.
